The WorldNetwork collection is produced in close cooperation between Germany's largest broadcasting company WDR (West German Radio & Television) and NETWORK.

Since its inception, the WDR has committed itself to inviting great artists from all over the world to record at its Cologne studios. When this wasn't possible or feasible, recordings were made directly on location. The best sound technicians have spared no effort to record these unique musical moments live: without overdubbing, multi-tracking or other cosmetic effects. Christian Scholze and Jean Trouillet have selected, together with Jan Reichow, the most outstanding concert, festival and studio recordings from decades of archive material to create this unique collection. Over the past years, Network, in collaboration with the WDR, has made local recordings, among others, in Senegal, Australia, Cuba, Brazil and Uzbekistan. Many CDs in this collection have received national and international record awards. The jury of the International Phonographic Award explained their decision: "Recordings from four continents, interpreted in high quality by singers and instrumentalists who, although receptive to new sources of inspiration, are nevertheless deeply rooted in the tradition of their culture and have not adapted to current trends: these recordings in the WorldNetwork collection illustrate the diversity of a predominantly non-commercial world-music of extraordinary quality."
Shivkumar Sharma, the great santur virtuoso, weighs every note he plays with infinitesimal care. The santur is known to us in Europe as the cimbalon. As if free of gravity’s fetters, Sharma hovers over the hundred strings of his instrument to create sounds of dazzling beauty, ranging from meditative calm to complex, percussive whirlwind passages. He is accompanied by India’s legendary tabla player, Zakir Hussain. Hussain achieved renown as a classical artist at an early age. In later years he went on to experiment with many other musical genres including famed jam sessions with many jazz and rock stars. Before Shivkumar Sharma, no one considered it possible to perform classical music on the santur. His sensitive and virtuoso playing has all but dispelled this hollow notion. To date, however, no one has emerged to rival Sharma – for the instrument was long known only in folk music.

The greatest Songs Ever' is a fairly broad statement, and not a very exacting one. Having said that, it is one of my favourite collections from the recent past. I play it a lot when we have a gathering of the clans- to share food and merriment. Some other reviews I have read on this collection, have actually made disparaging remarks with regards to track 9. Palmistry - Tabla Beat Science ( Bill Laswell, Zakir Hussain) As a lover of the tabla and a fan of Zakir Hussain- I found the comments jarring...but yes beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, music to the ear. Decide for your self.

There are, of course, many kinds of film music, including the kind that is almost as much a part of the narrative as the dialogue.

In the main. film scoring is a subliminal art, intended to be more felt than heard, but there are sometimes movies that require a score to illuminate them in such a way that it would not be amiss even if the orchestra was seen on the sidelines. The Thief of Bagdad and The Jungle Book are films of this kind, and the music Miklos Rozsa provided for them is a vital and delightful factor in their enduring success. Indeed, in the creation of film fantasy and the part played by musical scoring, there are no better examples than these.

The Thief Of Baghdad was put into production in the spring of 1939 in England by Sir Alexander Korda. By that time Rozsa has scored five Korda films, leaving little doubt that he would be given the Baghdad assignment. But doubt soon arrived in the form of director Ludwig Berger, who had just made a film in Paris with the eminent Viennese operetta composer Oscar Straus. Straus, insisted Berger, would write the music for his visualization of these Arabian Nights adventures. Unfortunately the result was music appropriate for Viennese Nights adventures, which sent music director Muir Mathieson running to Korda and making it known that the music was absolutely impossible. Recalls Rozsa, "I was then put in a very strange position. Korda told me to go ahead and write my score but not to tell anyone. He afterwards put me in an office next to Berger's and told me to play my music as loudly as I could on the piano. I did this for three days, until Berger came in and asked what it was I was playing. I told him it was my concept of the score. He said I was wasting my time since he already had a score, but what, by the way, was that last piece I was playing? I said it was an idea for the love theme. And what, he wanted to know, was that spirited little theme I was playing ahead of it? An idea for the song for Sabu. 'I Want To Be A Sailor.' He nodded and left. The next day he sent Straus a telegram saying that the distance between London and Paris made the collaboration impossible and that he would have to hire someone close at hand. He begged to be forgiven but I'm sure Straus never did."

The Thief Of Baghdad was almost three-quarters completed when war broke out in September 1939. All film production in England was put on hold, and in the case of the expensive Korda production investment was suddenly withdrawn. Since he had long had a distribution contract with United Artists in Hollywood, Korda decided to complete the film in California and set up an arrangement for possible future production there. Rozsa was brought to Los Angeles in May of 1940 to write the music for the new segments and to complete his recording of the score. This would also be his first opportunity to conduct one of his film scores: Muir Mathieson had conducted all previous Rozsa scores but he was not included in the move from London. Thereafter, Rozsa would conduct all his music for films.

The suite from this glowing score covers much of the plot of the enchanting film, surely one of the most successful of its kind ever realized on the screen. It begins with the King's fanfares and proceeds with the arrival in the port of Baghdad of the villainous Jaffar (Conrad Veidt), who intends to conquer the city with sorcery. Jaffar imprisons the handsome young heir to the throne, Ahmed (John Justin) but the mischievous little Abu (Sabu) steal the key to the dungeon and together they escape to Basra. There they see a procession and for the first time Ahmed catches sight of the Princess (June Duprez), and instantly falls in love with her Rozsa's love theme makes this abundantly and passionately clear. jaffar also desires the Princess and offers her father, the Sultan, a clockwork horse like Pegasus, which flies above the city with the Sultan on his back. The Sultan agrees to give his daughter but then meets his death when Jaffar presents another toy. the six-armed Silvermaid, which dances for the Sultan and then kills him. The final movement of the suite describes the happiness in the marketplace of Basra, as the people rejoice in the victory of Ahmed and Abu over the wicked Jaffar and the marriage of Ahmed and his lovely Princess. It is all a fairytale par excellence, and made the moreso by this splendid music.

Korda's success with The Thief of Baghdad paved the way for three more films to be made in Hollywood - That Hamilton Woman (more graciously titled Lady Hamilton in England), Lydia, and The Jungle Book, all of them scored by Miklos Rozsa. The latter reunited the composer with Sabu and would result not only in a wonderful music score but a recording in concert form, with Sabu as the narrator and Rozsa conducting the NBC Orchestra in an RCA album, among the first ever made of a film score. Issued in the summer of 1942 the album sold over forty thousand copies, a remarkable sale for a concert work in those years. In 1955 Rozsa again recorded the suite for RCA, this time with Leo Genn as the narrator. Another recording was made in Nurnberg in 1981 with the German narrator Elmar Gunsch, from which the suite minus narration has been drawn for this presentation.

As in the case of The Thief Of Baghdad, Rozsa's music for The Jungle Book goes beyond the normal functions of film scoring. It is not background music, it is accompaniment in which the music is part of the story telling process. Korda allowed for a loving treatment of Rudyard Kipling's story of the Indian boy Mowgli (Sabu), who wanders off into the jungle as a baby and is reared by a wolf pack. Both the beauty and the danger of the jungle are skillfully set by Rozsa's rich descriptivness - Mowgli is characterized by a folksong - like melody and the sadness of the mother who never forgets him is marked by a lullaby. But it is in his musical characterizing of the various animals that Rozsa achieves something quite rare in the annals of composition. The nature of each is captured by instruments that cleverly and charmingly spot them. The lumbering thunder of the elephants is marked by trombones and tubas, horn glissandoes speak for the hunting call of the wolves, cackling contra-bassoons limn the chuckling of Baloo the bear, muted brasses speak for Jaccala the crocodile, Bagheera the black panther slips through the jungle to the sound of shimmering strings, another contrabassoon, this time more dignified, signals the wise old python kaa and the gurgling of an alto saxophone suggests the mocking laugh of hyena. The hissing sound of the brass tells us of the poisonous cobra, the silly chatter of the monkeys comes across with the cheecky high notes of the woodwinds and the low. muted trombones warn us of the treacherous, murderous tiger, Shere Khan. The fight between Shere Khan and Mowgli is described by Rozsa with all its ferocity and all its triumaph, a victory that allows the animals to return to the peace and beauty of their jungle, thanks to the courage of the boy who loves understands them.

Had Miklos Rozsa composed only these two films scores he would merit a place among the listing of important, influential film composers. The Thief Of Baghdad and The Jungle Book are remarkable compositions, yet they represent merely a small part of a catalog that is incredible in its scope. Rozsa has proved himself a master of every form of film-romantic, ancient adventures and modern crime - and all of it in addition to his career as one of this century's most successful composers of concert and chamber compositions. His is a place in music unlike that of anyone else.

Evoking that feeling of instant mastery is the point of The Sounds Of India, which is appropriately subtitled “An Introduction to Indian Music.” It holds out its hand to the ignorant and does its job well.

If Shankar didn’t set out to become emblematic of an entire culture’s sound, he at least set out to educate the West. The first track on this disc is a 4-minute primer on the rich structure of classical Indian music, which is not like classical music in the West. Haydn and Mozart probably never improvised during a single performance in their lives. Not so with Indian classical. The first thing you hear on the disc is a few plunks on a sitar, then the cascading of the strings, like a harp, and then Ravi Shankar says (this is a slightly edited transcription; the ellipses are musical interludes): “Ragas are precise melody forms. A raga is not a mere scale.... Nor is it a mood.... Each raga has its own ascending and descending movement.... The soloist does a free improvisation, known as Alap, after which he starts the theme based on a rhythmic framework known as Tala. He can choose from many Talas...” Some Talas, he explains, have 16 beats, some have 10. He demonstrates, actually counting the beats for the first few run-throughs, then just counting each time he comes back around to one. He shows how the rhythm gets faster and faster, showing off a little bit to wow the Western listener, for whom he has these words of advice: “The Western listener will appreciate and enjoy our music more if he listens with an open and relaxed mind without expecting to hear harmony, counterpoint or other elements prominent in western music. Neither should our music be thought of as akin to jazz, despite the improvisation and exciting rhythms present in both kinds of music.” But this is misleading. Why not explore those similarities? He did himself, later meeting and giving lessons to John Coltrane and Don Ellis, and composing music for Buddy Rich and John Handy. (Don’t we wish we had a disc of Miles or Bird explaining it all, breaking it down for us? On second thought, we probably don’t need it, because what those guys played was much less complicated than this.) Why not listen to it as we listen to jazz? I listen for a mood, an overarching theme, the microfelicities of the improvisations. He might be introducing us to this music, but we don’t have to obey him absolutely. This album came about in part from Shankar’s dismay over the ignorance of the West about Eastern music. He gained prominance, in part, from his work on the music for Satyajit Ray’s debut film “Pather Panchali,” a kind of Indian “400 Blows.” Much later, he won an Oscar for his work on Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi.” In 1952, Shankar met the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who would say later that composers Georges Enesco and Bela Bartok and Shankar were the greatest musicians he had known. High praise indeed. Most important for the purposes of popular music, in 1966 Shankar met George Harrison. Shankar became famous in the West, even playing at the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock. He obviously didn’t insulate himself from other music, but at the same time he desired Westerners to hear Indian music in a pure form. Which is what this disc gives us. The first full musical track, “Dadra,” is a moody but joyful synapse fryer. It starts out restrained, then lets loose. The tabla player follows Shankar, beating out a funky groove, if one can say this about Indian music. The second track, “Maru-Bihag,” is my favorite, sad, wise, forlorn, and hopeful. It begins with a 30-second explanation of the raga by Shankar. “Maru-Bihag” is described as an evening raga in the liner notes, and that just seems right, as if it would be perfect to listen to at sunset. It is followed by “Bhimpalasi,” which is preceded by another explanation. It is described as having “a mood of tenderness; the suppressed longing of a lover, but serene, with dignity, and yet throbbing with deep emotion.” OK, fine. The disc ends with “Sindhi-Bhairavi,” a morning raga, quiet without much from the tabla, the drum, or the tambura, the drone instrument. Indian music can put you in a meditative state, in the way that great literature can. It can put you in what novelist and theorist John Gardner called a “vivid and continuous dream,” which he called the highest ambition of art. But I’ve always disagreed with Gardner that that’s it. A great book, in my mind, will have sentences that call attention to themselves, and because we are adaptable, we get pleasure from those sentences and then are able to return to the dream. I think that art should call attention to itself, otherwise it’s just entertainment. And Shankar’s music, though bringing to the listener a very vivid and continuous dream, is enough of an artist to call attention to himself. He is such a genius that even the untrained ear (mine) can hear how wonderful it is, in the same way my ears heard what was so astonishing about Miles Davis for the first time. But those pleasures are often intellectual ones. What is so astonishing about Ravi Shankar’s music is that while it is endlessly fascinating from that standpoint, what matters most is that this is music that can make you happy and bring you to tears, sometimes in the same moment. --Scott Holden Smith Tracklist 1. This 1960s classic is a perfect introduction not only to Ravi Shankar's brilliant work on the sitar, but also to classical Indian music in general.

Shankar offers brief, informative explanations of Indian ragas, scales, rhythms, song structures, and time signatures to set the stage for each spiritual piece he, Chatur Lal (tabla), and N.C. Mullick (tamboura) perform. Though Western listeners may not be able intellectually to pinpoint the subtle purposes of the various ragas' rhythms and movements,

unconsciously listeners will feel them vividly. For instance, the plodding tension created by the 2/3/2/3 rhythm in "Máru-Bihág" well reflects the raga's poetic metaphor of separated, longing lovers. The loose, playful improvisation on "Sindhi-Bhairavi" mirrors the passionate romance of lovers. Overall, classical Indian music is diverse and complex, but The Sounds of India simplifies it beautifully for those interested in exploring it and its greatest ambassador. --Karen Karleski Tracklist 1. "simply the best Indian sampler to come along yet..." Okay, make yourself a cup of chai and get ready to start your musical day. This CAFE BOMBAY CD has really got under my skin and I have played it a lot in the last two months. The sequence and selection was done by a Scotsman formerly associated with Triple Earth Records, Iain Scott, and he has done a superb job, making this CD a joy to play over and over. It starts quietly and contemplatively and then gradually builds to a crescendo in the middle and then falls away again, like a busy day in Bombay (I imagine).

CAFE BOMBAY is simply the best Indian sampler to come along yet. It's set up as a day in the life of a dreamer who works in a café in Bombay. He hears various things from traditional flute and sitar to the film music of A.R. Rahman to grinding dance tracks, and the whole thing has a pleasant day-dream quality to it.
The collection only has a couple of familiar tracks and basically charts new territory, unlike the scads of second-rate Bhangra compilations which all start to sound the same after a while. The packaging is very handsome and makes me keen to check out the other discs in the Cafe series. Though the cover says it contains "track by track commentary," these notes are like prose poems, discussing the comings-and-goings in the imaginary cafe. The selections might send you off looking for the original albums they came from, but then again sometimes the best track is all you need, and in this regard this is a collection of first rate tunes culled from a wide variety of sources.
"Yaro Yarodi," sung by three singers and written by Rahman, is very familiar, it may just be I am starting to recognise Rahman riffs, or I could have seen the film and forgotten the title since I don't speak Hindi. One good film tune begets another so we hear Lata Mangeshkar next: she's the old doll with the incredibly high voice that you either love or hate. There's a great rhythm that sustains this piece but it is followed by the Mother of all Grooves, Sukhwinder Singh's "Ghar Aaja", six minutes of head-banging bliss. Turn it up till the bass makes your crockery fall off the shelf! The song was from his 2000 album NASHI HAI NASHI HI. Tablas on reverb, tons of echo on the wailing vocals. I don't think it wasin a film, but the movie in your head is often enough.
