Jonas Hellborg - Kali's Son

A nondescript recording studio in Andheri, a Mumbai suburb, is not where you expect to find a globally respected jazz-rock virtuoso. Especially not next door to DJ Nasha's 'one stop shop for DJs.' But Jonas Hellborg, the Swedish bass guitar phenomenon who exploded onto the music consciousness of the mid-80s playing with guitar God John McLaughlin's new incarnation of Mahavishnu, is hunched over his HP Pavilion laptop, unaware of the incongruity of the scene. Hellborg is recording for what holds the promise of taking Indo-jazz fusion to the age of nanotechnology. His Status six-string bass rests on the wall of a 12 foot by 8 room. A cable snakes its way from it into his 'Line six delay and 14-second loop unit.' Another emerges from the eight-inch long green gadget to a compressor pedal, from there onto a router, and then into a computer through a mixer. Simple by 21st century standards. His partner in melody, Mumbai-based sitar player Niladri Kumar, has a set-up that would make purists miss a staircase. He plays a five-string sitar, which he calls the zitar and is in the process of patenting. It has a pick-up and is plugged into a Boss GT-6 guitar effects processor - a rocker's delight - and goes out from that into the mix. "Can I ask you a favour? Would you mind being my capo [a device that pushes all the strings together onto a particular point on the fretboard]?" Jonas asks. Before I can pinch myself, the index finger of my left hand becomes Jonas Hellborg's sixth left-hand finger, holding the strings on the ninth fret while he shows Niladri the motif for one of his compositions. It is an experiment, Jonas says about the power trio of V Selvaganesh - ghatam God Vikku Vinayakram's son - on the kanjira, Niladri and he are recording for. Selvaganesh is in Chennai, but he has recorded some tracks with Jonas, and Niladri is adding melody to the bedrock. Niladri's sitar sounds like a manic guitar. He rips off pure Indian riffs, the sound pure distortion, over complex rhythm structures. "55-57-59, then 555-777-555-999," goes Jonas. Niladri, who was classically trained since he was four, then gleefully overdubs effect-drenched sitar scapes. Underneath, Selvaganesh's kanjira grooves through time signatures as complex as 5 and three-quarters as if it were a rock beat. Raag n Roll...

Jonas hellborg - Good People in Times of Evil

This remarkable CD finds Jonas Hellborg, Shawn Lane, and V. Selvaganesh traversing heretofore uncharted musical landscapes and, in the process, creating one of the of the more unique and compelling collections of recorded music in recent memory. Those familiar with Hellborg's previous work won't be surprised to hear that the album defies categorization, but even longtime fans will be surprised at the casual grace and unnerving competency with which this trio deftly pickpockets from any number of dissimilar genres, producing a cohesive and utterly convincing whole. From the achingly beautiful opening track, "Aga of the Ladies," to "Bhakti Ras" (recorded live in Bombay with a guest appearance from renowned Indian sarangi player, Ustad Sultan Khan ), GOOD PEOPLE in Times of Evil ignores conventions and sets a standard for creative improvised music which will leave others scrambling to catch up for a while to come.

Esbjorn Svensson - Winter in Venice

A minute of silence and deep respect for this Magnificent musician who has left us... his Music never will... Esbjörn Svensson - Grand Piano, Keyboards, Percussion Dan Berglund - Doublebass, Percussion Magnus Öström - Drums, Percussion The shocking news of the death of Swedish pianist Esbjorn Svensson in a diving accident off Stockholm, on Saturday 14th June, will surely deeply sadden music lovers everywhere. I say music lovers, as opposed to strictly jazz lovers, as Svensson himself was neither restricted nor confined by categories, and was perhaps rather perplexed by the need of some to constantly attempt to define what jazz is. The music he recorded and played alongside drummer Magnus Ostrom and bassist Dan Berglund for fifteen years embraced the idiosyncrasy and fun of Thelonious Monk, echoed the drama and penchant for melody of Johann Sebastian Bach, and rivaled the energy of prog-rock trio Emerson Lake and Palmer in their halcyon days; the first two were influences, (E.S.T's second studio album was a selection of Monk tunes) the third is mere supposition. What is sure however, is that Svensson's music was drawn from many sources and appealed to a broad demographic; the Esbjorn Svensson Trio's concerts brought together jazzers and rockers alike, and likely converted die-hards both ways across the divide. I will never forget the first time I saw E.S.T. in a municipal theatre in Valencia, Spain, in 2001. Svensson's trio was the support act that night, and it was one of those rare occasions when it dawns on you rather quickly that the support is something special, relegating the main act to a role of welcome, though anti-climactic bonus. There was no dry ice, no lavish light-show either, but the music that Svensson, Ostrom and Magnusen conjured that evening raised goose-pimples. The unmistakable Nordic roots (elegiac, melancholy and folkloric) underlying a jazz syncopation twisted around a rock aesthetic, made for a unique and powerful cocktail. At the epicenter was Esbjorn Svensson. Technically muscular, his energized, cascading runs were as spectacular as a Cresta sled run, and his contemplative playing in turn somehow grand, and blue as a glacier. His music remains above all else melodic, and his knack for penning instantly memorable tunes was notable; a typical E.S.T. concert would see Svensson playfully forgetting the title of the songs they had just played: "We just played, em, what was it...?" only for numerous voices from the audience to set the record straight. In over a decade and a half as a recording artist his forays outside of E.S.T. were not numerous; he recorded with singers Viktoria Tolstoy and Nicolai Dunger, and with trombonist Nils Landgren. However, his energy and focus rested with Magnus Ostrum and Dan Berglund, and the trio they had gigged so long and hard to establish around the world. Sooner or later, one suspects, he would have tackled a solo album, as most pianists seem compelled to do at some point in their trajectory. No doubt it would have been instantly recognizable as an Esbjorn Svensson work, (with melody the blood in the veins of the music) and caused a headache for those who would seek to stick his music in a box. The tragic passing of Esbjorn Svensson at the age of forty four has robbed Sweden of arguably its greatest musical son since pianist Jan Johansson. It has also brought down the curtain on one of the most brilliant piano trios to enliven the modern jazz panorama, unsettle the jazz police, and in what was perhaps Svensson's greatest achievement, to attract all-comers. He will be sorely missed.

Kora Jazz Trio - Part III

When the Kora Jazz Trio released their two previous albums, the critics spoke of a « delightful alchemy », of « world jazz », or even « a miracle of freshness ». A warm welcome for a musical fusion of a new kind that seemed yet so natural. The meeting between Mandingo tradition and the freedom of jazz. The combination of the Kora with West African percussions and Afro-Americon swing. The dialogue between the griot and the blue note. After many tours and concerts, Djeli Moussa Diawara, Abdoulaye Diabaté and Moussa Sissoko continue their travelling adventure with the same sagacity and bring us their third album, released on October,6th, 2008 The Kora Jazz Trio is the union of these three men : Abdoulaye Diabaté, Senegalese pianist, a piano aesthete without frontiers, he graduated from the Conservatory. Fine musician and jazz lover. Djeli Moussa Diawara, Guinean whose brother is Mory Kanté. 32- strings Kora prodigy and equally talented singer. Moussa Sissokho, also from Senegal, master of griot percussion, who worked with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Jacques Higelin or Manu Dibango.
